Climate Pledge
To protect humanity now and through posterity I am committing to the following.
- I pledge to limit eating red meat. I will restrict intake of cows and lambs etc.
- If I choose to have children, I will have 3 or less.
- I will try to use cycling or mass transit options whenever possible and to participate in efforts to expand transit.
- I will restrict flying to only when necessary and try to limit flying to only when no other choice is available. If I do fly I will try to offset all emissions.
- I will try my utmost to conserve energy and minimize use of heating and cooling appliances.
- I will try my best to limit energy use to renewable sources when I have the choice. When I cannot choose I will fight for the ability to have this choice.
- I will try to help those close to me understand these choices and the need for those able, to also join the pledge.
- I will only consume what I need. I will not perpetuate extravagance and will only support companies who champion sustainable efforts.
- I will do my best to strive for and support sustainable and minimalist technology.
- I will stay involved in the public discourse on environmental issues and stay engaged on efforts to mitigate climate change.
Detailed Climate Pledge
Personal Lifestyle
Adopt a plant‑forward diet – Replace at least 70 % of meals with vegetables, legumes, nuts, or plant‑based proteins; eliminate beef and lamb weekly and choose sustainably sourced poultry or fish when animal protein is needed. Limit family size responsibly – If I choose to have children, I will have three or fewer and will raise them with climate‑savvy values, including education on low‑impact living. Zero‑emission mobility – Use cycling, walking, or electric micro‑mobility for trips under 5 km; rely on public transit or car‑sharing for longer journeys; purchase an electric vehicle only when public options are unavailable and offset its lifecycle emissions. Fly‑free commitment – Restrict air travel to essential trips only (e.g., medical emergencies, critical work). When flying is unavoidable, offset 100 % of CO₂ through verified projects and choose airlines with strong sustainability programs.
Energy & Home
Carbon‑neutral home – Retrofit my residence with high‑efficiency insulation, smart thermostats, and LED lighting; aim for net‑zero electricity by installing rooftop solar or subscribing to a green‑energy utility plan. Renewable‑first procurement – Prioritize 100 % renewable electricity for all appliances; when unavailable, join community solar or purchase renewable energy certificates. Demand‑response participation – Enroll in utility programs that shift load to off‑peak periods, reducing grid stress and fossil‑fuel generation.
Consumption & Technology
Circular economy mindset – Buy second‑hand or refurbished goods whenever possible; repair rather than replace; donate or recycle items at end‑of‑life. Sustainable tech adoption – Choose energy‑efficient devices (e.g., laptops with ENERGY STAR, low‑power servers); support open‑source hardware that extends product lifespan; avoid planned obsolescence by selecting modular products. Minimalist digital footprint – Limit streaming quality to 1080p unless higher resolution is essential; delete unused cloud files; use privacy‑focused, low‑energy browsers.
Community & Advocacy
Education & outreach – Host quarterly workshops for friends, family, and neighbors on low‑carbon living, covering diet, transport, and energy savings. Support climate‑forward businesses – Allocate at least 10 % of discretionary spending to companies with verified ESG commitments; avoid brands lacking transparent sustainability reports. Policy engagement – Vote for candidates with strong climate platforms; attend town‑hall meetings; sign petitions for renewable‑energy incentives, public‑transit expansion, and carbon‑pricing legislation. Volunteer for climate projects – Contribute ≥20 hours/year to local tree‑planting, community garden, or renewable‑energy installation initiatives.
Measurement & Accountability
Annual carbon audit – Use a reputable calculator (e.g., GHG Protocol or CoolClimate) to quantify personal emissions; set a 5 % yearly reduction target. Public pledge tracker – Publish progress updates on a personal website or social media using a transparent dashboard (e.g., emissions, miles cycled, renewable energy usage). Third‑party verification – Partner with an independent sustainability NGO to review and certify pledge adherence every two years.
Legacy
Intergenerational stewardship – Establish a family climate fund to finance education, sustainable projects, or green‑tech startups for future generations. Documented best practices – Compile a living handbook of lessons learned, successes, and challenges to guide others embarking on similar transformative journeys.
